Abstract
The five-rep sit-and-stand test (5R-STS) is a quick and objective tool that uses movements often used in everyday life. Objective: The objective of this prospective study was to validate the use of the 5R-STS Test in older adults with degenerative osteoarthritis-type pathologies in the lower extremities. Voluntary older adults with osteoarthritis and older adults without osteoarthritis completed the standardized 5R-STS in test and retest and the Time Up and Go (TUG) test. 88 older adults participated (67 women and 21 men) of which 42 had knee and / or hip osteoarthritis. The 5R-STS test demonstrated excellent test-retest reliability with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.98 in the total group. The cut-off point or upper limit indicative of functional deterioration associated with frailty, was identified for this study by age in 11.4 sec between 60 and 69 years; 12.6 sec from 70 to 79 years and 14.9 sec from 80 to 89 years. 31.4% of the subjects without osteoarthritis did not meet the short point and 44.8% of those without osteoarthritis, with an Od ratio of 0.71. The 5R-STS test is a simple and effective tool to evaluate the functionality and muscular strength of the lower extremities in older adults with osteoarthritis, when applying the statistical analysis there are no significant differences in the performance in the 5R-STS test between the group. with osteoarthritis and the group without osteoarthritis (p = 0.21), this same result was presented in the TUG (p=0.99) showing the validation of the test.
